I. How to breed!

This part is the easiest part and I'm sure almost everyone knows how to do it!

All you have to do is put two breedable Pokemon into the Daycare center together. Breedable Pokemon are Pokemon that can breed and are in at least one egg group together. The egg groups of all Pokemon are at the bottom of this guide.

When you talk to the daycare man with two breedable Pokemon he will tell you about their status. There are a few things that he can say.

The two prefer to play with other Pokemon.
This means that the two are not breedable and there will be no egg.

He might say that the Pokemon don't seem to like each other.
Don't worry about this. All it means is that the Pokemon will take longer to make an egg.

They seem to get along.
This just means a faster egg than the other one.

He could also say that they get along very well.
This is the fastest one.

The factors that make breeding go faster are:
The Pokemon are the same species
The Pokemon are from different ID numbers.

Both of those will make them produce eggs faster.

When you get an egg, all you have to do is walk around for it to hatch. Different Pokemon take different amounts of steps. The fastest is Magikarp.


II. Breeding for moves

Pokemon hatch at level 1 in Diamond and level 5 in the other games, and are born knowing all the moves that they would know at that level. However, you can breed them to have different moves that they would either know later or not know at all.

Egg Moves:

Egg moves come from breeding two different species together. The result is that the baby Pokemon will sometimes know certain moves that the male Pokemon knows that the female could not learn. Since the egg is ALWAYS from the female's line when it hatches, this is a useful way to get moves.

Example of egg move breeding:

The baby Chikorita would be born with Leech Seed even though it does not normally know the move.

There are many combinations that give new egg moves.

Try these and more:

Glameow with Hypnosis + Meowth = Meowth with Hypnosis
Gyarados with Hydro Pump + Salamence = Bagon with Hydro Pump
Electabuzz with ThunderPunch + Infernape = Chimchar with ThunderPunch


You can also breed TMs onto the baby Pokemon. If the male Pokemon knows a TM that the baby can learn, it will be born with it. The same goes for HMs.

Example:
If you breed your Totodile with Surf with a Squirtle female, the Squirtles will be born with HM Surf.

If both parents know a move that the baby will learn later, the baby will be born with that move, too.

Two Chimchar that both know Taunt will make baby Chimchar that already knows it at birth.


III. Breeding for IVs

When two Pokemon breed, 3 of the IVs are passed on. How EXACTLY breeding works is like this:

First, one stat is picked at random from either parent to be passed.
Second, one more stat is picked, but this stat can NOT be HP.
Third, the last inherited stat is chosen, but this stat can NOT be HP or Defense.

This makes HP and Defense have lower chances of being passed than the other IVs, and HP especially the hardest.

Here’s an example of this process:
Let’s say this male Ralts here:
20 / 0 / 31 / 14 / 20 / 29

was bred with this female here:
31 / 11 / 4 / 20 / 20 / 18

First the baby’s stats are generated 100% randomly. As an example, lets say that they came out to be

24 / 14 / 9 / 21 / 30 / 11

Now, here’s where the inheritance comes in.
First, one stat is randomly chosen. We’ll choose Defense and take it from the male.

24 / 14 / 31 / 21 / 30 / 11

Next, one stat besides HP is randomly chosen. This time we’ll take Attack and we’ll take it from the female.

24 / 11 / 31 / 21 / 30 / 11

Lastly, one stat besides HP and Defense is chosen, and for the last one we’ll take Special Defense, also from the female.

24 / 11 / 31 / 21 / 20 / 11

Now as you can see, three of the stats are still the ones that were randomly generated, and three of the stats were inherited. Sometimes the inherited stats overlap (i.e. Attack gets picked twice) so it appears that less than three were chosen, but it ALWAYS chooses three times. HP is 1/3 as likely to be inherited as the other stats, and Defense is 2/3 as likely.

Your best bet for IV breeding is to first have an objective. Set a goal to work towards so you know when you are done.

For beginners, try to aim for having 31 IVs in the most important stats.

Example:

Jolly Weavile - 31 in attack and speed
Impish Skarmory - 31 in defense and HP
Bold Vaporeon- 31 in defense and HP
